When breasts are sore and engorged it is not just milk but a mixture of excess fluid accumulation and milk. Physiotherapists at Health2u can visit you at home and provide lymphatic massage and teach self lymphatic massage to help the fluid drain and then provide relief. This type of massage is a very light massage and not a pummeling effect that sometimes mothers are given by other massage therapists which is painful and can cause bruising. Videos to remind you of the self massage techniques will be given access to after the session.
Physiotherapists can also provide ultrasound therapy to help unblock milk ducts that may be blocked causing problems with breastfeeding. The ultrasound helps by sending soundwaves into the tissues causing a micromassage effect and deep heating of the area 'melting the milk' in turn helping the milk duct to unblock, reduce pain and increase milk flow.
No it is not painful like it can be with other type of Lactation Massage Services where massage hard and often cause bruising. The lymphatic massage we do is very light and then there will be some more specific deep massage to the blocked milk ducts themselves. Some discomfort can happen with this part but not pain.
If you have one area of pain in one boob then 45 mins should be enough but if multiple areas of pain or areas of pain in both boobs we recommend an hour.
We can offer treatments such as manual therapy, massage and exercises to help cure your pains experiencing secondary to breastfeeding. But the most important thing is stop whats causing the pain. This is usually down to the positions you are breastfeeding in and we can advise and show you how to improve your breastfeeding positions.
