Physiotherapy for the pelvic floor is also about making your back muscles, abdominal muscles, diaphragm and hip muscles stronger in addition to the pelvic floor. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is not just making your pelvic floor muscles stronger but also your abdominal muscles, back muscles, diaphragm and hip muscles stronger. It also will look at your dietary habits and behavioural habits and retrain the body to allow it to work to its best form.
More relaxin in pregnancy causes more relaxing of the muscles and they can separate during pregnancy. In approximately 30% of pregnant women the 2 rectus abdominis muscles can separate known as the diastasis rectus. A way to feel is to place 2 fingers above your tummy button and do an abdominal curl – if the 2 fingers can fit into a gap between the abdominal muscles it would be worth seeing our Singapore physiotherapists to have a check. AVOID doing abdominal crunches and planks if suspect you may have one as will make it worse
